A quote from Elizabeth Strout’s My Name is Lucy Barton, nominated for the Man Booker Prize this year:
“A person gets tired. The mind or the soul or whatever word we have for what-ever is not just the body gets tired, and this, I have decided, is – usually, mostly – nature helping us. I was getting tired. I think – but I don’t know – that he was getting tired too.”
I am truly shocked that this was nominated for the Man Booker. I really was not impressed – especially knowing that the same author wrote Olive Kitteridge – no comparison!
This book stayed with me, but I couldn’t get into Olive Kitteridge – not sure why. The nomination did make me wonder too, but then I thought, maybe the committee likes short books? Remember The Sense of an Ending?
