Does the Turkey Have to Take Over?

THANKSGIVING

Renamed Turkey Day in our house, Thanksgiving always had mixed blessings: on the minus side  – a day spent with hair frizzing over hot pots and double ovens full of turkey and pies; on the plus side – a long weekend away from work with no more cooking for a week, and not so creative ways to use leftovers.  Now that the family is reduced to the two of us – even better to eat out, but I do miss the leftovers.

I found a site that has a 75 minute prep for a full Thanksgiving meal – might be a good way to assuage my yearning for homemade – and skip the frizz.

Pie is the New Cupcake

How could you ever get tired of cupcakes topped with mounds of icing.  Even Julia Child said that butter and sugar were the best – just not all the time.

Cake Couture is the local version in Honolulu of Sprinkles in LA and Magnolia in New York – impossible to pass by any of these places without buying a few – one to eat in the store; one for the road; and a few that you hope will make it home.

Now the New York Times says “pie” is the new obsession.  And Thanksgiving almost here – pumpkin, mincemeat, apple…

Here is a recipe from grandmom’s secret stash – with one of her secret ingredients…   the flakiest crust you will ever eat…

Single Pie Crust

Ingredients:  1 ½ cups sifted flour; ½ tsp salt; ½ cup Crisco (not butter); and 3tablespoons ice-cold milk (secret ingredient)

Sift flour before measuring.  Spoon lightly into remaining cup and level without shaking or packing down.  Combine flour and salt into mixing bowl.

With pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in Crisco; mixture should be coarse. Sprinkle with milk one tablespoon at a time; toss with fork. Work dough into firm ball with your hands.

Press dough into flat circle with smooth edges.  On lightly floured surface, roll dough to a circle about 1 ½ inches.   (I roll the dough between two pieces of waxed paper and peel it away into the pie plate – works great).

Couplet

If knowledge is power and ignorance is bliss…

What do I need to know, and how do I forget it?

Talk Shows

Before Oprah , Larry King, The View – there was Dick Cavett – in company with Mike Douglas and Phil Donahue – names from the past.

Do you know Dick Cavett?  He is not David Frost (well, maybe the American version).  He has a new book – actually, a rehash of his television interviews – in case you missed them, or were not born yet.

Talk Show is a stroll down history lane, so why does Dick cringe at reminding us that he was part of the past?

Teen Trilogy Tailored to Thrill

Reality TV was never this good – not that I watch much of it (Project Runway doesn’t count).

After gorging on The Hunger Games with a satisfying sigh, I had to wait awhile to get the sequels.  They both came together (from the library) – good thing too – the middle book in the trilogy was clearly padding and ended with no resolution.  But the last book – Mockingjay was the best.  It met all of Roald Dahl’s requirements for a great story and – despite the coming of age dialogue and triangle of lovers – a book to hold your attention and thrill you with action.

Skip the bologna in the middle and go for the satisfying slice at the end.
